Artificial intelligence as an epistemic authority?

When is a non-expert justified in relying on an LLM? Goldman supplies five imperfect ways to tell.

I wrote this while circling a question that gets mangled by anthropomorphism: not whether a model believes its answer, but when someone who cannot check that answer is justified in relying on it.

Goldman gives the paper its machinery; Hauswald lets the machinery work without first settling whether LLMs have beliefs. The conclusion is a qualified yes, with enough failure modes to make the qualification do real work.
